Planning a Law Week Event
Law Week provides many opportunities to raise awareness of topical social issues in your local community. Events you can organise to help raise awareness of these issues are:
• Mock Trials
• Open days and tours of the local courts, police station
• Forums, conferences or public meetings
Something Entertaining
Make Law Week something to be remembered by organizing a fun filled activity for your local community. There are a number of ways communities can celebrate together.
• Community barbecues
• Festivals. Fun days and street parades
• Street parties and neighborhood gatherings
Service clubs, neighborhood centers and various other community service organisations such as Apex and Rotary can assist.
Something Historical
Exploring our backgrounds, understanding past events and identifying important local history provides individuals, families and communities with an important “sense of time” to better understand the law of the land, their lives and culture.
Local history can provide valuable information and perspective on the significance of the Law Week theme to your community. Here are some examples:
• How has the justice system changed in your local area in the past fifty years?
• What steps have been taken in the past twenty years to "Open the door to the Law"?
• How have attitudes changed towards the legal rights of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and Indigenous people?
• What new legal services have been introduced into your area over the last twenty years?
• What are your questions about the law and how does it serve every citizen in your community?
You can gain a great deal of assistance from your local history society or group for help in researching and coordinating such an event.
The Justice & Police Museum has a small display available for loan:
'Museum in a Box' is a small display containing objects related to policing in the 1920s, including gambling paraphernalia, razors and police accoutrements.
